EMS (Electronic Muscle Stimulators)

EMS (Electronic Muscle Stimulators) can reproduce a vast majority of training efforts, i.e. jogging, stepping, aerobic endurance, anaerobic tolerance, sprinting, muscle (re)building, and maintaining or increasing a range of motion. They also have the ability to manage pain across most body parts. They can be used post exercise for active recovery of muscular injuries, cramp spasm and thrombosis prevention, treatment of heavy legs, massage and more.

EMS is widely used in hospitals and sports clinics for the treatment of muscular injuries and for the re-education of paralyzed muscles, to prevent or retard muscular atrophy, and improving muscle tone and blood circulation.

The EMS units send comfortable impulses through the skin that stimulate the nerves in the treatment area. When the muscle receives this signal it contracts as if the brain has sent the signal itself. As the signal strength increases, the muscle flexes as in physical exercise. Then when the pulse ceases, the muscle relaxes and the cycle starts over again (Stimulation, Contraction and Relaxation).

It is often used alongside other pain relieving and muscular improving treatments and programmes for a more holistic approach. Consider, in addition or alternative to EMS, TENSRelaxing or Deep Tissue Massage, Remedial Massage, Sports MassageHot Tub Hydrotherapy, Stretching, Strengthening and Aerobic Exercise Programmes, Nutritional Therapy and Herbalist & Aromatherapy Treatments.

I can't comment on how much of my knee strengthening is due to the exercises and how much the EMS but the muscles do ache after using it so it must do something. I prefer to use both to improve my chances.                                             Stuart
